Exhibition “Evolving Imagery: Ukiyo-e and Contemporary Prints from Japan” Inaugurated At the National Art Gallery, Islamabad

Exhibition “Evolving Imagery: Ukiyo-e and Contemporary Prints from Japan” was inaugurated today here at the premises of the National Art Gallery, Islamabad. The exhibition has been organized by the Lahore Arts Foundation Trust in cooperation with the Embassy of Japan and the Pakistan National Council of the Arts.
Mr. Pervaiz Rashid, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting and National Heritage, and Mr. Hiroshi Inomata, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, were present at the inaugural ceremony of the exhibition.
“Evolving Imagery: Ukiyo-e and Contemporary Prints from Japan” was organized and curated by Ms. Saba Hussain. This is the eighth exhibition of prints organized by the Lahore Arts Foundation Trust, including display of prints from Japan, China, Indonesia and Thailand.
Ukiyo-e is the Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo era (1603-1867) in Japan. Typical subjects include pictures of beautiful women, birds and flowers, the Kabuki Theater and famous landscapes etc.
Ambassador Hiroshi Inomata while expressing his views at the inaugural ceremony deeply appreciated the curator Saba Hussain for her dedication, and continuous effort for the promotion of Japanese art in Pakistan under the umbrella of Lahore Art Foundation Trust. He expressed the hope that her commendable hard work for this exhibition will further enhance the cordial relations between Japan and Pakistan.
Ms. Saba Hussain, the curator of exhibition, in her remarks said “Evolving Imagery: Ukiyo-e and Contemporary Prints from Japan” is an attempt to provide insight into the rich and dynamic tradition of graphic arts and their reinvention in Japan, enriching our perception of contemporary prints in the postmodern era in Japan.
The exhibition would remain open for public till 25th June 2014.
